Library Board of Control

The West Baton Rouge Parish Library Board is appointed by the Parish Council, and members serve without compensation. There are eight members including one ex officio member who serves from the Parish Council. Terms of service are five years, and members may be reappointed.

Duties include:

  • Managing the day-to-day business operations of the library including:
    • Preparing the annual budget
    • Accounting
    • Payroll
    • Insurance
    • Hiring
    • Purchasing
    • Training
    • Termination
    • Long- and short-range planning
    • Reports
    • Building Improvements and repairs
  • Interlibrary Loans - A system for borrowing books for patrons which are not owned by the library, and answers requests for items by other libraries.

Adult Services Department

The Adult Services Department provides reference and information services, assistance with computer and internet use, and teaches basic computer classes weekly (C.O.I.N.S.). These classes can be found on the calendar.

Duties include:

  • Selecting fiction and non-fiction books for purchase to continually develop library collections for adults
  • Removing outdated items from the library collection
  • Selecting needed replacements for purchase
  • Responsible for the library's Adults & Seniors page, which provides updated, relevant information pertaining to adult and senior age individuals

Circulation Department

The Circulation Department welcomes patrons to the library and registers new users. The Circulation Department also assists patrons with information questions and computers.

The Circulation Department welcomes patrons to the library and registers new users. The Circulation Department also assists patrons with information questions and computers.

Duties include:

  • Circulating library materials to patrons
  • Operating the computer system to check items in and out
  • Generating reminders for overdue items
  • Accepting payments of fines
  • Shelving incoming items
  • Maintaining the order of library collections

Information Technology Department

The Information Technology Department maintains and manages library servers and the public and staff computers, lab laptops, wireless access, the local area network, internet access, updates, etc.

Duties include:

  • Prepares and manages the Technology Plan in compliance with Federal E-Rate subsidies and reimbursements
  • Plans for advances in hardware and software, maintaining awareness of the public need for free access to current technology

Outreach Department

The Outreach Department works under the guidance and authority of the Youth Services Department. This department offers services to children, teens, and families in locations throughout the parish. Partnering with the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities, PRIME TIME Family Reading Time is offered as a six-week literacy series periodically in school settings.

Duties include:

  • Mobile Library / Bookmobile:
    • Providing service to schools, communities, and individuals
    • Outreach van delivers books and other materials to schools, Head Start centers, and day care facilities
  • Staff perform story times, reading reinforcement activities, and fully-staged puppet extravaganzas on educational topics

Technical Services Department

The Technical Services Department handles the ordering, acquisition, cataloging, and processing of items for the library collections.

Other department duties include:

  • Verifying that items received arrive in good condition and match invoices before clearing for payment
  • Affixing barcodes, book jackets, labels, reading levels, and various other classifications to items in preparation for circulating them
  • Responsible for the library's annual Spring Art Show

Youth Services Department

The Youth Services Department offers services to children, teens, and families in the library. Staff perform story times, reading reinforcement activities, and fully-staged puppet extravaganzas on educational topics.

The Youth Services Department offers services to children, teens, and families in the library. Staff perform story times, reading reinforcement activities, and fully-staged puppet extravaganzas on educational topics.

Duties include:

  • Providing reference and information service
  • Providing assistance with computer and internet use
  • Selecting juvenile and young adult books for purchase
  • Continually developing library collections for youth
  • Removing outdated items from the collections
  • Selecting needed replacements for purchase
  • Plans and implements summer reading programs for children and teens each year
  • Responsible for the library's Babies, Toddlers & Preschoolers, Older Kids and Teen Zone pages, which provide updated, relevant information pertaining to the respective youth age groups
